This one hit home. When home air conditioning became possible in the new fangled "Suburbs" around the mid 1950's my Uncle tried to talk his brothers and my other Uncles on my Dad's side to move to Clearwater/Tampa to build homes. Nobody went but him and his family. Florida, at that time, was mostly swamp and orange groves...and the least populated state this side of the Mississippi. Needles to say, my Uncle did well and built a heck of a lot of homes in Tampa, Clearwater, and St. Pete...sigh.

I have lived here in Florida on and off since 1978. I have worked installing carpet in newly constructed homes in the Clearwater/St Petersburg area with absolutely no air conditioning. When I went to Basic and AIT in the late Spring and Summer, I was already well acclimated to Southern heat and humidity. I felt badly for those from cooler climates who could not handle the heat. I saw a lot of heat stroke and heat exhaustion in the field during infantry training exercises. SGT Kevin Hughes

SGT (Join to see) - Oh, I know all about that heat and humidity. I must save ten or twelve folks kids a year down by the river here in NC, simply because they did not know the signs of Heat Stroke/Exhaustion. Kids beet red, dry as a bone, and lethargic, and they make them keep walking. When I tell them their kid is done for the day, they are incredulous. I don't back down though. I tell them to look it up on their Smartphone, or call their doctor. Of course, I haven't been able to walk for almost a year now- so I won't run into many anymore. But I still carry extra six ounce water bottles in my pack!

Can't imagine living where you and I do without this invention. Swamp coolers just don't cut it come August!

Amen! Our bug guy (I live in an old garage apartment) told me that NC now has three tropical mosquito borne diseases: Zika, Nile Fever, and Dengue Fever. I thought you had to go to Ft. Sherman and Jungle School to catch that crap. I told my brothers that the Humidity and heat are getting so bad people are dying of diaper rash. It keeps them away in the summer. LOL
