What do you guys think about this? I think from an economic standpoint there would be no reason for an employer to hire a developmentally disabled worker if they have to pay them the same hourly rate as a non developmentally disabled worker if the person cannot produce at the same level. At that point it is basically telling private employers that they need to subsidize mentally disabled people. Other workers will have to take up the slack and usually they require more supervision. I worked at a plant that tried sub-ing out some simple tasks to one of these sheltered workshops. We had to stop because the rework rate and scrap rate were too high. Sad situation but what are you going to do? I have worked in plants that were located near deaf schools and we hired many people from the schools and they were paid a normal wage as the rest of the hourly guys because their productivity was the same. That is a totally different situation. Its a numbers game in private sector. You need to turn a profit to stay in business.
