How lives are devastated by a single blow
How do one-punch deaths happen and can anything be done to stop them?

Exactly. Kill indiscriminately when threatened. You never know when a naked person will kill you with one punch.

"The opinion that these “unarmed” individuals pose no serious safety risk ignores the fact that 1 out of every 5 people murdered in 2014 was beaten or strangled to death. According to CDC data, of the 15,809 homicides that year, 3,121 of the homicide victims were beaten, strangled, or forcibly drowned. “Unarmed” assailants kill more than 3,000 people each year, or more than three times as many people (total) that are killed in encounters with police."
"Approximately 11% of the police officers killed annually are killed by unarmed assailants."

Perhaps there is a reason why the jury is taking so long.

PCP is a synthetic drug that has some of the most violent, dangerous effects of any of today’s drugs of abuse. Like K2 (Spice) and bath salts, PCP abuse can result in dangerous hallucinations coupled with aggressive behavior.

1SG (Join to see) - It sure seems like sarcasm on your part, but it is had to tell on the internet. But it is pretty hard to ignore that 11% of the police officers that are killed in a given year are killed by unarmed assailants.
As part of my duties in the Marine Corps, I was sent to civilian law enforcement schools to learn Police Officer Survival Techniques. An assailant within 60-70 unobstructed feet can cross the distance before an officer can:
1) Observe enough of the assailants action to form an accurate guess as to what their adversary might be doing.
2) Orient to the fact that the threat is now imminent.
3) Mentally form an effective plan, and finally
4) Implement the plan.
The article gives no details of the event, or the physical differences between the assailants. I will not hazard a guess as to whether the shooting was justified or not, particularly with a huge paucity of meaningful detail. That is why we have trial by jury, not trial by journalist.
