IMHO, Dune is the only SciFi story that real science has not overtaken. It is visionary beyond all others. It goes beyond computers (illegal since a great war with "thinking machines") and human computers perform functions once the bailiwick of transistors and diodes. I have also been fascinated with the obvious parallels between the Fremen and Islamic Jihadists, only in this case they are a heroic band fighting an imperial dynasty. The great problem with any epic story is the transition from the images in our minds constructed from words on a page to the images created by a film director on a screen. Many would argue that all who have attempted this feat in the past have failed. I think one came close, but no cigar...

I have read Dune at least twelve times and have every book in the series. Definitely enjoyed the movies as well.

Dune is just too big a story to put into a 2:17 minute movie. That was the fatal flaw in the 1984 version. I could easily imagine the first book made into 3+ 2:30 movies. I'm hopeful. No doubt in my my mind, the best piece of fiction I've ever read. Every four or five years I read all the "Dune" books again.
