Had a sailor that was in an LA gang. He decided to get out and the only way to do that was the Navy. He said the gang wouldn't have let him out if he was going to stay in LA, as they thought he would be a threat, but they actually said they would leave him and his family alone if he went in the service. They did, and was actually one of my better sailors. The stories he told would raise your hair, though...

LT Brad McInnis You Run 1st Div? Always had some Interesting Characters in 1st Div! LOL! I had a Unique Relationship with 1st Div. I Treated them Nice and they worked pretty well for Me but I've also Heard them Say "CT1 is F**king Crazy" No I'm Not!

I did meet anyone like that. However, I did meet guys that should not have joined the Navy. It was not a good fit. The military is not for everyone.

The society of the period wouldn't have tolerated the real story, it would've shocked sensibilities of the time, I'd seen a documentary on History or Military Channel about it some time ago, when it was finally told for real...Honolulu was apparently really like that in WW2, as also described in From Here to Eternity by James Jones....

The film from the novel, as shown here, was also apparently quite accurate to the period...the novel The Dirty Dozen by EM Nathanson, while lauded as a film, was total fiction, even though often thought of as being accurate...the description of Phenix, AL, however, in the novel, was apparently relatively true, though, as an exceptionally corrupt city during WW2....
