I was participating in an extemporaneous speaking competition at the time of this election. Each participant picked up a slip of paper with a random topic, then had one minute to gather their thoughts before making a three minute presentation. My topic was "Should a Catholic be elected President of the United States?" A dicey topic, especially considering that the judge was a Catholic nun/professor. I used the full minute to gather my courage and then parroted every reason against it that I heard from my father who hated Catholics more than any other group. The judge glared at me for the whole three minutes while the audience held their breath and turned beat red. With just 30 seconds remaining, signaled by a yellow light, I paused and smiled until in the last few heartbeats I added, "...or so I've been told" I scored very well.

I can absolutely picture that Jack. As I posted, people today just don't realize what a controversy this was.

Don't think many people today realize what a controversy this was. The concept that if a Catholic was elected president the United States would become ruled by the Catholic church was a very real thing.
