Before my vision went south, I deer hunted with my Model 29 S&W open (iron) sights, 8 3/8" barrel. I scoffed at people hunting with optics... but NOW - I would be the recipient of my own derision. "Gettin' old ain't fer sissies!"

I used a 44 mag super blackhawk with factory sights. My best shot was 70 yards on a running deer. Variable focus lens ended that kind shooting. I use a rifle these days.

SSG William Jones Squirrel hunted in my younger years with an H&R .22 nine shot "peacemaker" usually killed my limit,head shots,but none over 25 or 30 yards.
Now,i still use a .22,but it is a 6x scoped 10/22 Ruger rifle.
As you stated-i also scoffed at those hunting with anything else."Getting old is definitely not for sissies". lol
