I think Benjamin Franklin was important as well. French high society adored him, and he prevailed to structure a strategic alliance with France.

CPT Jack Durish - The French used its fleet to blockade the English fleet in the US. 10,000 French troops were involved in the war. France gave us supplies, weapons, and money. The Revolutionary war facilitated the bankruptcy of France.

MAJ Ken Landgren - Even more costly was the Armada assembled by France and Spain following John Paul Jones' successful circumnavigation of Great Britain, raiding all along the war. However, the Admiral in charge of the troop ships refused to land until Jones, in charge of the escort, destroyed the British fleet which refused to leave port and engage them. Then, after disease broke out among the soldiers, they returned home leaving Jones with just a small squadron to face the British fleet. As Brits watched from the cliffs, Jones captured the British warship Serapis and sailed away victorious as his own ship the Bonne Homme Richard sank. It was this event, I believe, more than anything else that caused the British population to petition Parliament to sue for peace and allow the Americans to go their own way

Adams has always been one of my favorite Founding Fathers. He was complex, possibly a bit arrogant at times, and certainly not above the usual petty human foibles...but he was also committed to honesty, devoted to principle, and fiercely passionate about justice. As you suggest, I think without Washington, we'd have lost the Revolution...without Adams, that revolution may have gone in one of many negative directions.
