Pretty ridiculous in my opinion. Were the burn pits hazardous, probably. Was burning crap hazardous, probably. Is the air you breathe in Afghanistan and Iraq hazardous even without the American burn pits, probably!

Should of used that $100 million on more counter IED equipment.

Breathing in those fumes from burn pits can lead to serious illnesses or even death. It's been documented many times...too many times.

CPT Aaron Kletzing the poo ponds were the one that I had an issue with most of my deployment as the burn pit was on the other side. So you had your pick of great "fresh" air....

While at COB Speicher in Iraq (08-09) the burn pit was about a mile (straight-line distance) from our hangar. When the wind shifted, the smoke/fumes would drift right into our hangar and linger there until the wind shifted again. This was a regular thing for the entire year-long deployment. As a result, I developed a persistent, non-productive, dry cough that lasted till three weeks after we had redeployed. I had listed this on my PDHA, as we were advised by the medics.

I got the same cough while in (KAF) Afghanistan too. Again, it subsided three weeks after redeployment.

I did get a resurgence of this out of the blue a while ago, but it only lasted a couple of days.

All listed on PDHAs from both deployments.
