I know it's the Onion...I get that it's "humor", and I realize that far worse has been said about other leaders for equally inane reasons. However, I'm going to take issue with this one...please forgive me for speaking from the heart.
We don't live in a theocracy. For better or worse, Americans (presumably) have the right to approach the question of God in their own way...whether they worship the God of Abraham, Thor, a fifty year old copy of Superman, or nothing. Pence claims to be a Christian, and that's his right; a right most of us here swore to defend, and thousands have died defending. If we've grown so indignant, so spiteful, and so partisan that the best way to express our political leanings is to crudely insult leaders we disagree with on a platform supposedly aimed at helping veterans find fellowship and help...then I am truly disappointed.
And yes- I'm equally disappointed when other "Christians" feel the appropriate response is vitriolic hyperbole and viciousness, such as was recently in the news. Such behavior doesn't reflect what Christ taught, or what common sense would inform me to be an effective means of changing opinions.
There are debates that can change people's views, open others eyes, and lead to positive change. There are some arguments that need to be had, because the consequences are so significant. If we want to discuss the issues and express our thoughts and experiences, I'm all for it, and can do so without insulting or denigrating those I may disagree with... but this sort of thing loses me because there is no debate to be had, no question to answer, and no solution to be found.

You are right they have the right to their own religious belief, but don’t try to force your religious bigotry down peoples throats.
He only swore to take care of people who are “Christian” are are not gay, so how is that defending everyone’s rights.

MSgt Bischoff- You may have information I'm not privy to, but to the best of my knowledge, he did take an oath to defend the freedoms of all Americans. It's also unclear to me how the Vice President is forcing anything down anyone's throat by refusing to fly a rainbow flag from an embassy (I presume that's the act in question). From "our" perspective, doing so would be "forcing" Christians in America to accept something our faith defines as "sinful" as a national value equal to those represented by our national and state flags, and other heraldry...I don't think it would be accepted to fly the Christian flag, so to my mind, there's no difference.

LCDR Joshua Gillespie - You must read the legislation he passed and tried to pass in Indiana. This guy is a stone cold hypocrite and bigot and cares for only only one group of people, the ones he deems worthy.
This is a man that works for the people!

A Timeline of Mike Pence’s Discrimination Against the LGBT Community
2000: During his congressional campaign, Mike Pence said, “Congress should oppose any effort to put gay and lesbian relationships on an equal legal status with heterosexual marriage.”

I will concede that I indirectly disagree with any legislation involving "defining" marriage... personally, I believe any direct involvement of the Government in marriage (as a religious sacrament) is unconstitutional; but then again, I'm not in Congress. You will probably disagree (and I'm not going to try an convince you otherwise), but I do not believe being homosexual or transgender should be held equivalent to belonging to a race, gender, or other "protected class". The majority of the cases cited in the provided article center on that question. Mr. Pence isn't voting "against" anyone's right to practice a "lifestyle"... he's voting against attempts to force institutions, organizations, and individuals to endorse it.
