From a sniper’s perch overlooking the Tigris River, Gallagher shot a girl, estimated to be 12, as she walked along the riverbank with her friends, members of his unit testified to Navy investigators. They also claim that Gallagher shot an unarmed elderly man in the back, took “random shots, sometimes into buildings,” and that he bragged about slaying “10 to 20 people per day,” including noncombatants.
Now he is scheduled to face trial on a dozen crimes, and the only thing standing between Gallagher and justice is the fact that Donald Trump somehow finds his record laudable.
Trump has requested material on the Gallagher case, as he considers a pardon for the SEAL on Monday – Memorial Day.
It is odd timing to use that day to dishonor the service of honorable soldiers by excusing the behavior of a war criminal on the eve of his trial, but Trump has followed this story since Fox News turned Gallagher into a symbol of liberal hatred for the military and patriotism itself.

I have never had to kill someone. I remember a news story on one of the networks about a group of US soldiers clearing a Mosque where enemy fighters had been treating the wounded. The wounded had been abandoned. As US troops entered an interpreter told the wounded not to move. One man started to roll over and a soldier shot him. News men filming were shocked. The Army information officer told the news men the soldiers have a duty to protect their comrades. Was the man rolling over because he hurt or because he had explosives under him? Not clear cut. But every American soldier and news person left the building alive!
