Volunteering is a good gap filler on resumes also. I reviewed one vets resume and asked why he didn't have any of his volunteer work on it. He was under the impression that only jobs went on a resume. Knowing the job he was applying for, and the skills he used in his volunteer work, I stressed the importance of having it on there because it was very relevant.
