I feel they were used as canon fodder. They were the tip of the spear for dangerous missions. The 442 Regimental Commander was so incensed he did not shake the hand of the Division Commander.

Yes, they were considered "expendable" in almost non-stop combat but did have a mission accomplished track record. To rescue 211 soldiers of the Lost Battalion from Texas, they experienced over 800 casualties. Despite many of them and their family members being incarcerated in concentration camps, they fought to prove their loyalty and trustworthiness as Americans. Failure was not an option.
