Having spent over 20 years (1980's & 1990's) in the Pacific northwest I was exposed to a lot of so-called "militias." In my opinion, most (please note I say "most," not all) militia groups are white supremacist and/or grown men wanting to play soldier. They have been allowed far too much leeway. I think we are due to see a tragedy in the very near future.

(I see here the usual right-wing attack on the SPLC)

MSG Stan Hutchison: We already had a tragedy a few years back in Arivaca. And we are now seeing many people in that area are pushing back against some new "militias" that have shown up in the area.

Patricia Overmeyer - You are correct. That incident slipped my mind (I am getting old,, lol).
This may have been the opening salvo in this struggle. The Gonzalez family may be the first KIA's of many such acts.
I can forsee a fire-fight developing between some of these terrorist groups and either between law enforcement officials, local Hispanics, or possibly armed drug cartel members.

MSG Stan Hutchison - Although he didn't specifically belong to a militia group, a large salvo was tossed when Timothy McVeigh blew up the Murrah Building. He was part of a group of "constitutionalists" here in AZ that are still rather active. I still have a few cases with them and they are rather disturbed individuals. Stamp all the court paperwork that they are sovereign citizens, courts have no jurisdiction over them and can't force them to pay child support, etc.
I agree, there will be a firefight at some point with the militias and some other group. And there will be a bunch of people who claim there were good people on both sides, blah, blah, blah. They aren't domestic terrorists if they aren't muslims, etc. Meh.

Personal opinion: Today's "militia" groups are the descendants of the Whiskey Rebellion.

There is some overlap of beliefs of the two groups. The post-Constitutional group wanted near-total autonomy and disagreed with paying taxes despite being official American citizens. Today's groups chose to attack federal government (i.e. attacking tax officials and occupation of Malheur Wildlife Refuge, etc.) based on desire to benefit from American infrastructure without wanting to abide by US law.
