We were taught all about bullet drop in basic training and understood the physics involved from day one. Maybe its because we were at Ft. Sill for our basic training and they also taught gunnery there too? We used the 25M targets to site in our rifles and then went to the range when we were ready. Thanks for the great marksmanship share on RP

Im guessing you had the m16 with iron sights same as i did. Now theres a red dot scope and from what my kids told me there are no iron sights for backup

Perhaps the army should look into the Marine Corps Known Distance course? There's quite a bit of information to be gathered off of those extra 200 yards.

We use field fire in the Army when on pop-up targets. The targets are at 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 meters. You did not know which range target was coming up and there were always some points where 2 targets came up. Since you did not know when or where your target was coming up you had to be prepared to shoot at ANY target at ANY time. While not really the same as what might happen in combat, it DOES give you a bit more realistic situation than shooting at a known specific range as specific times. Yeah, a KDC range is nice for just getting shooting practice but as far as I am concerned, not a good method for actual official qualification with your weapon.
