Today in American Military History - 1911
The U.S. Army adopts the M1911 .45 ACP pistol as its official sidearm
One of the longest-serving pieces of equipment in our military, right up there with the Ma Deuce!! I had one in my first 2 or 3 units until we transitioned to the M9 9mm Barretta in the early 1990s!
The M1911, also known as the "Government" or "Colt Government", is a single-action, semi-automatic, magazine-fed, recoil-operated pistol chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge. It served as the standard-issue sidearm for the United States Armed Forces from 1911 to 1986. It was widely used for more than 75 years -- World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
