I once saw an SR-71 on display at March Air Force Base and a second one's at Lackland Air Force Base.

The FB-111 program was a traditional pipeline into the SR-71, only drawback was you had to get an astronaut physical and for quite a few that was a 'you bet your wings' thing.

Many forget that this aircraft was first developed as the YF-12 fighter. Its claim to fame was that it could be based in the mid US and make intercept of Soviet aircraft coming over the pole before traditional fighters based in Alaska. That concept never came to be and hence the SR-71 program came into being.
