MEET THE FTW TRAINER: My name is Billy Capps and I should be dead. I started working in Corrections in 1997. One of the problems in this line of work is that there are no physical fitness standards that have to be maintained. Many of us become overweight and in combination with the intense job stress, mortality rates are very high. I fell into that category. At the age of 33 (2008), I was overweight, smoked, had bad eating habits, and was cursed with bad genetics. I was diagnosed with diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. I only discovered all of my medical ailments after going to the doctor for experiencing chest pains and shortness of breath. I learned I had two blockages in my heart that were 90% blocked and required repair with two stents. I stopped smoking, made lifestyle changes, and began numerous medications. In 2010, I began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I fell in love with the sport and in doing competitions. This was a great way for me to stay fit. Unfortunately, in 2014 while training for a competition, I had a heart attack. This time, I had five blockages that required five stents. This was a big setback but I was able to continue training and started competing again. Fast forward to 2018, again while preparing for a competition, I suffered a second heart attack. This time it was repaired with two more stents. I now have a total of nine stents but I refuse to quit!!
As you can see, I am not your stereotypical personal trainer. I do not have seven percent body fat and ripped up. However, I am your average person, like most of you, juggling life and trying to maintain a healthy life style. Unfortunately, I had to learn the importance of nutrition and fitness the hard way. I am very blessed to still be alive and decided to dedicate my life to helping people, with hopes to prevent others from things I have been through. I have extremely poor genetics but if I had made better choices when I was younger, I know I could have prevented some of the mess I endured. I have gained a wealth of knowledge over the years that I am looking forward to sharing. I invite you to join me as I get in the best shape of my life. I would be privileged to help you do the same.
