Forgetting for a moment that it was an old policy, and it was a 9th Circuit ruling under Pres. Obama that specifically mandated separating the children from their families being held in detention...

For every child that is legitimately separated from his/her family at the border, there are innumerable children that are kidnapped in their home countries or taken from their families by coyotes or fellow 'migrants' along the way and 'provided' to militant age men who wish to 'buy' a kid in order to sneak across as a 'family unit' to pad their chances at being 'caught and released'. Our desert is littered with the bodies of such children who've been either killed or abandoned to die alone in the desert once their utility has run out for the purchaser.

If I were an illegal border crosser desperate to cheat my way into the country in order to gamble for a better life for my children, I would RATHER those children be temorarily removed from me so that border control can genetically verify that they are in fact my children or that the children could be released to relatives (within the us) while I paid the price for my illegal action alone rather than they suffer with me. The system we have had-- catch and release of 'family units' has been a magnet for a system of human trafficking whereby children are being stolen from their families and killed or sold into sex-work once they've gotten their kidnapper across the border.

Of course-- the news doesn't report THAT part.
