It is common folklore in New England that the capture of Fort Ticonderoga in 1775 by Revolutionists was because of rum. As the legend goes, Ethan Allen was persuaded to attack the fort as it had the largest supply of rum in the region. Because who cares about strategic location, cannons, gun powder, and supplies when you can have barrels of rum?
