LTC (Join to see) hadn't heard of this POW/MIA incident involving LT Dengler until you shared it. Kudos! Amazing story of perseverance while captured by the enemy! He remembered his Code of Conduct well during captivity:

I remember reading about this escape! I had just graduated or about to Graduate from High school! I think it took place just before before I joined the Navy or mayby right after?

I just looked it up, he was shot down Jan 1966, I graduated HS June 65, and enlisted in the Navy Dec 1966. He flew his mission off the USS Ranger!

PO3 Bob McCord - You are the first person to have asked this question of me....and Yes, I did wonder how I would handle captivity in the hands of the Cong! I always felt death would be better than torture for years on end! I have great respect for POW's and none for the North Vietnamese!! And since I was an E-5 Top Secret Crypto Tech, the thought crossed my mind many times!
