This is so strange. It sort of strikes me like when some American zealot goes to North Korea to either preach Christianity or think he can singlehandly improve the conditions of the NK people, and ends up getting arrested, handing the NK government another political pawn.

Nothing new, this is how the great game has always been played, you grab one of mine, I'll grab one of yours. I doubt Mr. Whelan is a spy. I have long been a proponent of friendly relations with Russia and that does not make me a spy. International relations do not have to be perfect relations. Having Russia as a friend, a friend with tension, a wild card friend, makes far better sense than pushing Russia into the opponents corner. After all, the real enemy is not Russia, not even close. We all know who the real enemy is.
