We need technological advantages. Production overseas means the overseas country will get our technology.

...and what if those countries are a potential adversary. I've already heard of the Chinese selling our government computers with chips that help them hack them

I believe we have the capabilties through some of our major Defense contractors to ignite the building and manufacturing machine if needed for another World War (if that will ever happen again). With the new weapons of mass destruction available to the largest world powers I don't forsee another World War of any kind (just the destruction of mankind), so the question should be will there ever be the need for mass production and manufacturing like we witness during WWII or will technology, drones, and robots be the future of warfare in the next 100 years or space domination? Just my thoughts on the subject and article CPT Jack Durish

The famous science fiction author, Ray Bradbury, once said "We should worship at the altar of the atomic bomb". He is correct inasmuch as it has made the concept of total war inconceivable. However, we may still need to produce weapons of for conventional war albeit asymmetrical. I have read various reports that we require key components for these weapons and that they come from other nations. One of the more interesting components are the screw (propellers) for submarines being produced in Japan (and that the Japanese even sold propellers produced to our design to the Russians)

CPT Jack Durish with being a veteran, 21 years in the semiconductor industry and talking with a nephew who is an Army veteran stationed with the NSA, I think you hit it right on the mark.
