My Irish grandmother was an indentured servant in Boston at the age of 16, and my father came though Ellis Island alone at the same age. One thing that stuck in my Dad's mind his entire life was the immigration official telling him they'd ship his 'sorry Irish ass right back to Ireland' if he ever became dependent on the State.
