I am in England ever year (English wife) so yeah...its true. One of the aspects not mentioned was the rise in petrol (gas) costs. This has made it difficult to afford to drive, making many seek alternate means to travel. In other words, do I really need a car to drive my two girls to soccer practice a whopping one mile away from my house, or should I walk? Likewise, the bus drives right by my house and drops me off at work. And bus fares keep falling.

A watchdog committee found that British pumped North Sea oil was cheap but the government was keeping the price high to force people to keep from becoming China where everybody felt they needed six car households. The local municipalities also lowered public transport costs. And sadly, this out of shape American finds himself walking to and from the shops and due to the crisp weather, I hardly notice it.
