I am all for sensible gun control as a gun owner I weep for trajedys like these but firearm confiscation is not the answer even if it is because of a person's mental health if a person is a danger to themselves or others get them some help. They may need to talk to professional help they may need medication to help them they may need to just have a beer with somebody they may need to be hospitalized but thier Constitutional rights shouldn't be trampled on just because somebody is scared of them. People like this lady make me sick it's deplorable to use your status as a member of the us military to subvert the very Constitution that we all swore an oath to support and defend. I and many many others take that oath seriously to this day.

Another example of "throwing S*** at the wall to see what sticks" journalism from NBC. Why must we, as veterans, advocate for stripping rights away? I seem to recall oaths upholding the very opposite of such. Why must legal gun owners who have broken no laws be penalized by further gun control that does little to nothing to prevent violence?
One of my soldiers returned from war deeply broken, mentally and physically. Warning signs were there and went largely unnoticed. He was one of the many who died by his own hand. Would gun control have stopped him? No.
As far as the author's "opinion" is concerned, I know many real combat Marines who would rip off her EGA for suggesting gun control or working for the Brady campaign.

As a professional member of my state's counseling association, I have worked with individuals with alcohol/drug and mental health issues and as a retired senior weapons instructor and being an old guy I support any reasonable effort to limit gun access by domestic abusers, people in mental health crises and addicts. Moreover, I strongly support limiting civilian access to military grade weapons. As a life long historian, I was long ago persuaded that the 2nd Ammendment supports a well-armed colonial militia (now called the state National Guard) and not a guarantee for citizens to own weapons of war. I am frankly tired of the ignorant retoric I have heard for years from so many of the "...the only way they'll get my gun is to pry it from my cold dead hands" crowd. Shame! Our children and grandchildren deserve a better and safer world. PS: I have lost a nephew to gun suicide and a 3 year old relative to an unsecured handgun tragedy.
