My Dad was a WWI Vet. He recalled the first Armistice Day (he never adopted the term "Veteran's Day") very clearly. His unit was served a field mess. They were scattered about, sitting with their mess kits, when a unit being withdrawn from the trenches marched past along the road beside the field.
Leading the way was a color guard, with the American flag unfurled in all its glory. It was the first time they had seen the colors uncased since they arrived in France, months before. All the troops set down their mess kits, and for the first time in almost a year, saluted the colors as they passed.
