There was a lot of talk about kinetic strike vehicles years ago. There were even some tests performed, i.e. land impact tests on Eniwetok during SAC Global Shield '79. Also, the article says the Minuteman III was introduced in 1962. The Minuteman I went on alert at Alpha flight at Malmstrom, AFB, Montana in October '62. That was Kennedy's "Ace In the Hole" during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Minuteman III was introduced in 1970.

You're right the MMIII is quite a bit newer. Alpha 1 is still the spot media goes when something missile related comes up. The pride of Wing One.
