I am firm believer that if a someone commits, is indicted, and eventually convicted of a crime that requires a long-term prison sentence (for argument sake let's say 10 years or more), I truly believe that instead of the tax payers footing the bill the inmate's family should bear a large portion of the responsibility. If the family is unable to provide any assistance, then that inmate will need to work to help pay for his/her incarceration. I think that by having the family on the hook financially, it might (key word might) help prevent people from making bad decisions because what person in their right mind would want their families to pay for their time behind bars? Crazy idea I know but I can see an argument for something like this.
