This article counters an earlier article by Michael Kofman. From Kofman's article, I think that dispersal of NATO forces in Poland is wise. In this article, however, I am leery of reference to "hardened and entrenched positions." I think fortification is obsolete and has been since my grandfathers' time. I also disagree with limiting presence to "modest numbers of air and tactical missile defense units." I think if you are going to put troops there, those troops should be organized and equipped for the fight - so Infantry and Armor, with supporting fires.
At the same time, I recognize that one reason for Putin's antics may be to stir up a response from NATO (a peaceful response - such as deployments of NATO forces to along the Russian and Belarus frontiers) that can be spun to his public as evidence of a growing external threat against which they should support his strongman regime.
