I think the last true movie about boot Camp was the DI. with Jack Web. Their was a lot of BS. in full metal jacket. Anyone that's never to Bootcamp don't have the right to criticize the Marine corp. Having been in the Marine Corp & Army I can understand why. A lot of people found a home in the Army. They treated it like a 9 to 5 job. The Marine Corp gets rid of the dead wood. I knew a SSgt who tried to ship over but he was over weight. Lose the weight or get discharged. The DI,s holler at you in your face to get you used to the confusion of war. They train you to be a leader if you have to take over because its next man up when your Marine leader is incapacitated. If one recruit screws up the whole Platoon gets punished. If you do or try to do what your DI yells at you even if he chews you out you will make it. Recruits now days are send home if they cant conform. It used to be that once you signed the papers, Your ass was grass and the DI was the lawn mower. I am telling you what the old corp before 1980 was like. I was in the corp from 59-63 and the Army from 63-66. The time I was in the corp was the best time of my life. ( 17-21) Semper Fi.

Outstanding article. Actually, Full Metal Jacket was fairly factual regarding basic training during the 60's and 70's. There was a particular persona that the 'Corps wanted the drill instructors to assume. If I hear exaggerated tales of Parris Island, I remember that a fairy tale begins: "once upon a time" a sea story begins "now this is no s***.
