Not many people remember that on the same day as the 1871 Chicago Fire, there was a far more deadly wildfire at Peshtigo, Wisconsin. It started as a forest wildfire driven by high frontal winds, and completely destroyed the town (built mostly of wood) and killed the majority of its citizens (estimated at between 1,200 - 2,500 dead). There were also major forest wildfires in Michigan on that day. I remember that when I was a child attending gradeschool in Wisconsin back in the 50s, we were taught about the Peshtigo Fire. It was still a major cultural memory.
