Politicians and war fighting don't mix, never have and never will.

Nicci Eisenhauer Seems like even politicians would have learned this by now, but guess they get overwhelmed by their perceived power.

Black Hawk not entirely the only aircraft down, alas: On March 14, 1994, an AC-130H Spectre gunship "Jockey 14" from the 16th Special Operations Squadron crash-landed 200 yards off the Kenyan coast, near the town of Malindi. Eight of the 14 crewmen aboard were killed in the crash. Jockey 14 was operating in support of ongoing operations in and around Mogadishu, Somalia at the time of the accident. My cousin, Cpt. Dave Mehlhop, USAF was among the 7 found at the site, and Bill Eyler was never found.

The 105mm Howitzer on board is the largest gun ever fired from an aircraft. A round stuck in the barrel on Jockey 14, exploded the gun and started the chain of events that led to the crash — where no pilot would ditch.

Thank you for always flying close cover, Dave. I know you're always with us guiding our missions here on the ground.

3> Dave

1> Lost: Dave is one of my THREE "fiery plane crashes".
2> Lost: One of my best friends' son was on the plane that hit the South Tower on 9/11.
3> 9-lives or more: AIMS's Chief Medical Officer, CAPT (Ret) Dr. Thomas F. Schneider, MD was shot down twice in Vietnam. He's my "third time is a charm". I pray my dear friend, Dr. Schneider, lives forever.

AIMS is devoted to holding military medicine from a preventive medicine perspective, Tom's most fervent hope for the future. Tom's legacy is my memorial to Dave and baby David, only three years old. I know you're resting in peace, Dave. Your family loves you, misses you and prays for your fellow heroes, KIA, MIA, and the 6 survivors and their families. And, as always, my family sends our love to the families of the Black Hawk, as well.

Sorry for your loss. We were anchored off Mogadishu, and pulled to go search (24 MEUSOC). The ARG lost some SAR birds and crew on that deployment also. One off coast and one during trans-atlantic at night.
