It was in June, way back in 1780, that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts officially ratified its state constitution. The document took John Adams—yes that John Adams—about a month to write, and has lasted 236 years and counting. Adams also wrote the regulations for the Continental Navy as they were ramping up to the Revolution with Brexit. As president he signed the bill creating a small outfit called the United States Marine Corps in 1798.

Adams did all he could to avoid a war with revolutionary France. This skilled and statesman-like stance cost him the election of 1800 to his former VP Jefferson, who had anonymously sniped at him in the Press and encouraged others to do likewise.
