I just sent this in on another thread, the only instance I'd ever read of where a civil servant, I gather former Army, actaooy commanded troops in the field, during Vietnam, he wasn't a contractor, he was a civil servant at the time, I'd read....

I studied Vann and his leadership style at Leavenworth in ILE. He was indeed a unique character who brought an interesting dynamic strategy in Vietnam. Had he not died in a helicopter crash who knows how his strategy would’ve continued to play out. Bill Paxton also did a great job playing the character in an obvious biased but good movie.

I remain in awe of the men who served and fought in Vietnam and ashamed of the way they were treated back home. I've read a number of books on Vietnam, but I'll add this to my list. For our Vietnam vets, THANK YOU. Much respect.

I had the honor of serving under Colonel Ron Leonard who I understand Vann was en route to see when the helicopter crashed. A great many officers I served with knew Vann and served in this time under his influence.
