CPT (Join to see), as much as I respected Senator McCain, the building needs to remain unchanged. I have no respect for Schumer whatsoever.

Here is the link from the official senate website that mentions his segregationist history. And while democrats did control the senate in 1972 by a few votes they had several southern state dems whose positions later became part of the repub party

LTC (Join to see), I guess we can “source” each other ad infinitum regarding almost anything. I utilized the building as the source since we were talking about renaming the building. Here’s the link to my source. Again, the official government source makes no mention of Russell’s “poor behavior” in the naming of the building in 1972. Regardless of how many Democrats later became Republicans, it was a Democratic controlled Senate that named the Russell Senate Office Building.
If you wish to continue, have at it.

LTC Stephen C. - Sir, there is no reason to continue. We simply disagree, but I have no doubts as to your sincerity. In the past I have had friends and compatriots with whom I have disagreed. Nevertheless we stayed friends in spite of our differences because civility was not breached. I hope to live long enough to see those days again.

Maybe the DEMs would not mind if we rename a building all ready named for a DEM to McCain.... Or is Schumer wanting to rename a REP building. Political opportunism!!!

SSgt GG-15 RET Jim Lint - if there were more republicans like McCain today, I think there would be more across the aisle cooperation. But the repubs have chosen to exclude democrats from even attending the meetings where they construct their bills. Instead, they hold republican only working groups to try and come up with a plan that they can pass using only republican votes, since they control both houses. So they present repub plan a and repub plan B for a vote with no compromise or consideration of the democrats position whatsoever. Then, when they can't pass their own bills despite having the majority, they try and blame the dems for not voting for their bill.
They did that with taxes, healthcare and immigration. They refuse to even allow democrats into their republican only plannng sessions where the details are hammered out. So instead of attempting to hammer out agreement and compromises between parties, so that members of both parties can vote for a bill, the repubs try to just hammer out agreements between themselves, and can't.

LTC (Join to see) - Glad the DEMS never did that in the past. We need a third party.

SSgt GG-15 RET Jim Lint - If you are looking for some ulterior motive on the part of the Democrats then it would be that the Democrat it is currently named after was a huge racist who did everything he could to stop civil rights legislation. Not exactly someone the Democrats really would like to remember or should be remembered.

SPC Kevin Ford - That sounds like an ulterior motive. Sounds like Senator Byrd.
