For those who look at the PRC's fortified island plan as a significant threat... which it is.. usually not said in the same breath is mention of Operation Cartwheel in WWII. Many probably never heard of it.. being our own history tends to look at the North African Theater of Operations at that time... and not the Pacific. This shows what can be done to such island - how they become a trap for those there - and more so - heavy losses have to be taken to resupply them . Great historical read..

Thank you for the post. I assume Rabaul was part of the US strategic campaign to protect Australia and her shipping lanes at on the onset of the Pacific War.

It was more the Japanese plan of using it as a springboard towards Oz and then as a part of the defense of the Empire... and that is how it fell into our strategic planning..
