Muzzle Brakes - what are they for?

Honestly now, how many of us knew this? Also, do you call it a "barrel brake" or a "muzzle brake"?

The M109 - big barrel even with spades big recoil - muzzle brake.

I'm surprised Gov. Brown of Calif didn't ban it in his ARNG because it makes it look like an "assault gun".

1stSgt Nelson Kerr I was with CAARNG 1/185 Armor 2000-2003, 2/185 Armor title 32 1 year active duty and with 2-116 Cav IDARNG deployed title 10 Kirkuk 2004-2005. I can make lame Armour jokes. Gov.Jerry Brown was my Governor when I was in HS.

Worked on tanks and artillery as an armament guy. We always called them muzzle brakes.
