I was watching the funeral to see if the police officers turned their backs when the mayor spoke. I don't think they did. This article is about the mayor's news conference a couple days ago. That's where the police officers showed him their backs.

I voted that professional respect must be maintained because - despite what the mayor may have said about protestors (even if he was wrong) - he's still the police officers' boss and they should show respect to the office, even if they don't like the man or what he had to say.

Thanks for clarifying that, ma'am. I watched for a mention of just that, but I must have missed it.

I stand by my answer, especially at the funeral. I feel the police officers made their statement at the news conference, and now it's time to get back to business. Got it, you don't like your mayor. Now it's time to get back out there and do your job.

There is something of a parallel here to the military in my mind. We (and the NYPD) may not agree with everything said or done by our political leaders, but there's still a job to be done, and we have sworn to do that job. I guess the police have more room to maneuver when it comes to protesting and voicing their displeasure with their political leaders.

Even if there were policy and personality differences, can you imagine your entire formation turning their back to the President of the United States?

I think what happened in New York tells you a bit about the balance of power in the city.
