A good idea gone bad, just like Medicaid. You bring a cute little lion cub into your home and it grows up and eats your family.

Really?

“Mandatory spending is currently estimated to be $2.739 trillion for FY 2019. The two largest mandatory programs are Social Security and Medicare. That's 62 percent of all federal spending. It's also three times more than the military budget. “

Considering there are over 64 million people on Social Security that's not too bad.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen If it were just Social Security, I may agree. But 62% of the budget goes to the programs, leaving 38% for everything else, requiring over a trillion to make up for in borrowing. 336B to service the debt. And much of the Debt is carried by the nonexistent Social Security Trust Fund. Being a recipient of SS and Medicare, I am definitely for the programs, but there must be major changes in order to preserve the programs for future recipients. The Trustee of these programs has been warning us for years.

Agree changes needed. First would be not allowing Congress to borrow against the trust fund which is what depleated it. Wish debt to SS was a baloon payment that was coming due, that might get Congress to repay what they've plundered. I fully agree with raising the full eligibility age, but that's kind of like spitting into the wind in the scheme of things.

Great article and I have no issues with the system, however do have objections to referring to it as welfare. Workers pay their money into the system when young and get their money back once they retire. Insurance perhaps, but welfare no way.

Absolutely, and insurance isn't welfare in my book. Off to Tampa for pre op appointment for wife, suspect schedule will be crazy for next few days.
