When you build a tool that does all things, it does none of them well. Rifles are crappy can openers.
I remember the original concept. It was a flying cattle car. Absolutely no armament, no EW package, nothing. The entire complement of Ospreys in a MEU could put a reinforced Rifle company ashore in one lift. Every other function was carried out by other aviation platforms in the same task force.
Then the pork barrel interests got involved, before the first bird gt anywhere near the fleet. The range was cut in half and you needed the MEU's entire complement a reinforced rifle company (-) ashore, in two lifts.
I still like the original concept. Let Super Cobras and Vipers be Super Cobras and Vipers. Let Fixed wing attack be fixed wing attack. Let Troop transport be troop Transport.
