Ship is only 30 years old. There are plenty of US Navy and US Coast Guard ships much older. Eagle is second oldest commissioned vessel in the USA (built 1936). Only USS Constitution is older. Two ships in my town of St Petersburg were built in the mid 1960's.

Unfortunately the Navy and Coast Guard hang on to their older ships for far too long so that they can justify building the newer, sexier and incredibly expensive platforms that they want but don't necessarily need. Too many recent systems have had huge cost overruns, sea trial mishaps and systems that simply don't work. Meanwhile the Coast Guard has ships that are literally falling apart with no replacement in sight. The USCG has one heavy ice breaker left, the Polar Star, while her sister ship, the Polar Sea is used for spare parts. The Star requires near constant maintenance to keep it running. Other ships used by the Coast Guard are also old and falling apart, while their operational tempo increases. The Eagle is a war prize and a training ship, and the Constitution is a floating museum that they drag out once a year to turn around so the tide hits the other side of the ship. It doesn't even have half a set of sails.
