Physical description
grenade the No 74 Grenade (L 9.5in x 4.5in diameter) consisted of a spherical glass flask containing a filling of 560 grams of Nobel's 823 (nitro-glycerin), covered with a stockinet type of material impregnated with a strong adhesive derived from birdlime. The entire assembly was then enclosed in two thin metal hemispheres that were hinged at the bottom and spring loaded. The handle, made of bakelite, contained the striker mechanism that was held secure by a sheet metal safety lever and a safety pin, to which was attached a label saying 'DANGER, DO NOT REMOVE THIS PIN UNTIL READY TO THROW GRENADE'. The hinged protective cover was removed prior to throwing the grenade, which had a five second delay after the lever was released.

The bomb was designed early in the Second World War, when Britain had no effective anti-tank weapons to counter German armoured vehicles. Although not officially adopted, the Mk I was issued to both the Home Guard as well as the Army in 1941, and was declared obsolete in January 1946.
