Sounds like a science experiment I used to do with corn starch, mix a little corn starch and water until thick, it will pore like water, but if you try to push your finger into it, the substance hardens and resist until you let off the pressure the it goes back to a liquid state.

We used it as an example of plasticity which was a term applied to how the layer of the earth under the core behaves. Plus it was a cheap fun experiment for the classroom.
