That is sad considering farmers are the salt of the earth.

Farmers are some of the hardest working, patriotic Americans, and often the least recognized or appreciated for their service. Now, with many of their children leaving the farm, the costs of farming, the regulations and controls, interest rates climbing and the competition with the Corporate "big boys", farmers are having tough times. Many are working outside the farm to make enough to keep things going.

I know several farmers, who are my fellow VFW post buddies, who work other jobs to do just that. Hell, in the first ten years or so I was a copper, I had as many as ten different off-duty jobs that I worked. Fact is, during those years, even my vacation days were often spent working outside jobs. Took me a decade or so to realize my "bridge" was fully engulfed at both ends. Hundreds of my coworkers did the same thing, too.

My sister committed suicide due to taking painkillers, having an issue with the divorce and drinking a lot. Maybe some of these farmers are also closet or were closet alcoholics. Do yourself a favor if you drink, stop drinking. Go to an AA.org or militaryonesouce

I am so happy you are sober! My wife new friends that were her age 10 years ago that would Shake if they wouldn't have alcohol after a few hours. It is pretty bad and it could be a contributing factor in half hour suicides that we have today in the military. Nobody wants to say anything about it because of the alcohol Lobby. To me, there is no such thing as responsible drinking. I bring that up in class every time we talk about it in the army. My wife has lost so many dedicated drivers or drivers two accidents were there sober and somebody else hits them and they get in an accident and get killed from some other drunk hitting them. Don't do drunks any favors by being a designated driver. Let them hire a taxi. They have money for cigarettes and alcohol, why can't they have money for a taxi?
