Could One Year Of Mandatory National Service Change This Country?

Personally, I see the benefits of this kind of contribution to the common good. However, aside from the draft during the state of emergency during the Civil War, a draft for federal service in some form, military in this case, Is a 20th century phoneomena in this country. If reinstated, beyond registration, in the absence of absence of a declared emergency, it is likely to trigger legal battles. Even so, without a draft, coercion aside, more might volunteer for service if the benefits and commitment were sufficient to elicit their interests and committment.

With regard to withholding febdetal benefits, or other rights in exchange for national service, I suspect that would require a constitutional amendment change [14th amendment?]. Our loss of a shared national, common perspective and experience, arguably began in the early 1970s,— with many causes; emergence of cable TV, personal entertainment, targeted marketing, post-war malaise, scandals, and the end of the draft, generational shifts, to name but a few. As these elements combined to alter our perceptions of self, obligation, service, and concepts of national identity vice global identity. We are Americans By birth, or by choice; and by law we enjoy the benefits of that status.

I oppose mandatory service and conscription with every fiber of my being.

Mandatory Service is involuntary servitude and it's incompatible with a free society.

If the country can't win it's wars with recruits joining of their own free will than those wars are not worth fighting.
