No doubt these 'swatting' events are disgusting, but a bigger question should be - Why are 'heavily armed SWAT teams' rushing to reports of a stabbing and a person barricaded in the home? Are the local police unable to handle a situation like this or at least determine if it's valid?

I did a quick search on that question of why SWAT responds to a person barricaded. Usually the SWAT team is part of the police force and they get called when someone is barricaded in their home with a weapon and hostages because they have the equipment to see inside to find out what's going on, hostage negotiators and so on. The patrol officer doesn't have all that equipment on him if coming up on that situation. Say a police officer gets a call about a domestic dispute. He gets there and finds out the perpetrator has their victim hostage and has a weapon. Can that patrol officer stop them on their own or even with backup? That's why SWAT comes in when there's a barricade report or a hostage report. SWAT is supposed to be trained to handle these type of situations and have more access to equipment and weapons that a patrol cop won't have.
That's what I got from a quick search - someone else who has done LE may educate better.
