This didn't seem to be a very good idea from the start, why anyone would want to follow through with it escapes Me. It apparently did get a lot of attention but at a huge risk to public safety and loss of railroad property. I suppose if You were there and didn't get killed or injured it was a once in a lifetime thing to see.

To the excellent historical summary, I might add that Scott Joplin, the famous ragtime composer, wrote a march (originally for piano) entitled "The Crush Collision March" for this event. The music is descriptive of the events up to and including the great crash. I have the piece on my iPod and was just listening to it today while driving home.
