China has so far moved with prudence in its effort to advance its maritime territorial claims and held back from asserting itself in the East China Sea to avoid antagonising Japan, but it has moved with greater assertion in the South China Sea – including by ignoring the decision of the Permanent Court of Arbitration - where it has incrementally acquired a dominant position. It has shown little hesitation in clashing with the Philippines or Vietnam. It depicts the area as part of its sovereign territory in official maps and the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) has vowed in its recruitment ‘anthem’ to recover all the 3 million square kilometers of the South China Sea that Beijing claims. Meanwhile it has declared the South China Sea as a “core national interest”. If I was asked by a young intell analyst what language to study and where to focus for my 20 year career.....China.... In the 1980s, Russian. Then we had too many of them in 1993. Later, who knew anyone who spoke Arabic. Then give them a BONUS NOW!!!! What will be the next need? China with 3 times our population, and 6 times the population of Russia....Focus is China.

How old was that article? It would appear, from my perspective, that it has been overtaken by events.
First, China owns the South China Sea now, de facto though not de jure. I think that unless physically challenged, the latter distinction will fade.
Ship classifications are odd. Again, from my perspective, what the PLAN calls Corvettes & Frigates would correspond roughly to our Destroyers & Cruisers (please correct my misconceptions).
Finally, there really appears to be no innovation in the PLAAF. Even their bomber, with a naval variant, has the appearance of a Soviet Backfire.
So, again my opinion, it appears that sophistication of their military hardware leaves much to be desired. That is not to say the cannot someday overwhelm us with numbers.
As for ownership of the South China Sea... brute force and audacity are working.
