I am going to sound like a grumpy old CHENG, but since I went completely dark at 1SD on my 1st U/W as CHENG directly because of all these new fangled "tests"... If they don't get a good handle on the engineering plant upgrades and thoroughly test the crap out of them, none of the new-fangled radars will be worth crap... just look at LCS. That being said, the sailors will give it their all to make sure that it works.

I think it will go better with these. I was surprised to see they upgraded the AC to 300 Tons, I thought the 200 Ton units were behemoths. Our plant on Laboon ran perfectly even or VCDs did well. We were the test platform for the ROs so on my deployment we ran both VCDs and ROs, we had water coming out of our ears.

LCDR (Join to see) - I love those RO's. Best water I ever drank. We usually ran it to overflow as they made so much water. Bigger AC's are always nice!

Ok so now were embarking on a new Arleigh Burke Flight III DDG-51 class destroyer. My only real concern is were is all this fine hardware and software technology going to be housed, so that a well placed missile strike doesn't repeat the issues we saw with (Spruance class destroyer) . I also agree with a better displacement a/c system to keep your techie stuff cooler which equates to running more effectively. I additionally concur with the improvements in the area's of weapons systems, propulsion, radar, and missle defense. There's one little factor which resurfaces every time I read about this. That is , this new radar going to detect the low flying French excocet missile which tracks at below radar detection ? Like the FFG-31 USS Cole in 1987 in the Persian gulf, when Iatola kookamamy in Iran allowed one of his pilots to launch a deliberate attack on the Cole. We sent crews from our command USS Cape Cod AD-43, to assist in penetration of blackheads to retrieve sailors KIA. If the ship's onboard missle defense system's were energized maybe it could have turned out differently ?? But seriously all we can do is wait to see what goes on in real time testing.

The Burke is a much more survivable platform then the Spruance hull (including the CG) That is one of the reasons Cole survived in Yemen and Fitz did not go down at sea. I was the REP5 locker officer and trained the Cole's REP5 officer. The new SPY-6 is truly a game changer, this new modular phased array can be scaled for everything from Carriers to LCS. As far as the AC displacement I had four of the 200 ton submerged centrifugal compressors. With SPY off and normal outside temperatures I could not keep one loaded and had to rig an inline water heater to add load or it would trip because liquid Freon would enter the suction side of the compressor.
